Solution Overview & Benefits

The Bamboo Trailer was designed by Carry Freedom for use in developing communities to allow anyone to build a strong adaptable trailer from locally-sourced materials. This trailer can be built locally by following DIY instructions provided by Carry Freedom. These plans allow a builder to make a trailer from most materials, with pinned joints, and no bending or welding.

Whether made from titanium or bamboo, this is a stiff and light trailer. It can be varied in width, length and strength, and made to fold. Once assembled, it can be towed by a donkey, person, bicycle or moped. The Bamboo Trailer's basic frame can be adapted to carry many things including produce, firewood, water and even sick people who require transport to health facilities.

History & Development

Nick Lobnitz designed a simple trailer that anyone can build out of surplus materials. The goal for this project is to teach simple manufacturing skills and to ease transport issues in developing countries. A DIY bicycle trailer can be built from the downloadable, free plans below.
