Azuri Quad Solar Home System provides a complete package of household lighting for as little as US50 cents per day. The product comes with 4 powerful LED lights, rechargeable radio and torch, plus mobile phone charging. Once the system is paid for, all the energy generated is free. Quad comes with unique HomeSmart machine-learning technology which ensures customers have ‘light all night’ as it monitors climatic conditions and adapts to the customer’s lighting needs. Quad provides an affordable entry point to larger solar products from Azuri.
To bypass large upfront costs which generally price home solar out of reach from rural communities, end users pay for the system over a period of several months via PayGo top-up’s. The transaction is carried out over a mobile money service, where end users top up via mobile phone, and then receive a text message which contains a code to input into the Azuri system. This adds credit to the end users' Azuri accounts. The solar home system continues to function, and at the same time is gradually paid for. Payment is calculated on a regional basis via consulting local partners, and is directly relative to average income amounts and trends in the area.
Azuri Technologies is a commercial provider of PayGo solar systems to rural off-grid communities. With the widest reach of any provider in Sub-Saharan Africa, the company is addressing the problem of energy access which affects the 1.3 billion people around the world who lack access to the grid.
The first generation of Duo solar home systems, named Indigo, was developed in 2012, with the first series of pilots deployed in Kenya. Subsequently three revisions of the product have been made, moving from a 2.5w to 5w photovoltaic panel, and further improving the efficiency of the LED technology used. The light temperature which the LED produces has also been adjusted to produce a warmer light, with feedback from end users suggesting that it is more natural, and easier to read by. Product development continues with the addition of Azuri’s unique HomeSmart™ feature, which learns the customer’s power usage patterns over time and optimizes light brightness, battery charging, and load conditions to ensure the system delivers the best user experience depending on the available sunshine. HomeSmart™ is forecast to be available on future Azuri products.
