GiraDora

Designmatters

Solution Overview & Benefits

GiraDora is a human-powered washer/spin-dryer that a user can sit on in order to increase the efficiency of hand-washing clothes, while also improving overall user experience. The user sits on top of the drum-like appliance and pumps a pedal with their foot, which agitates, cleans, rinses, and then spins-dries clothes.

GiraDora more than doubles productivity, increases health of women and children, and affords the opportunity to break through the poverty cycle. While providing a more comfortable, ergonomic, and efficient way to clean clothes, GiraDora also affords opportunities to generate income.

History & Development

Designmatters was created in 2001 with a college-wide taskforce as a way to engage Art Center students and faculty in social impact art and design, a rapidly expanding field.

Designmatters invites collaboration with other disciplines outside of the art and design world, like science, business, engineering, and anthropology.
