'Keyhole Gardens' is a gardening method that uses locally available materials to retain moisture and nutrients by placing an active compost pile in the center of a round garden bed. Although most helpful in hot and dry locations, a Keyhole Garden will improve growing conditions in most climates. From a bird's eye view the garden is shaped like a keyhole. A notch is cut into a round garden bed, and the notch makes for easy access to the center compost pile.
The Keyhole Garden scheme: layering is proven to enhance soil health. Some layering suggestions include, from bottom to top: wood, cardboard, a bit of compost, petroleum-free newspaper, manure, worms, wood ash, straw, topsoil. Users may also repeat, compost, straw, topsoil or some such combination until desired height is reached.
