The M-Drop is an all-natural, low-cost ceramic tablet that disinfects household drinking water. The tablet destroys waterborne pathogens and protects families against illness and disease. The M-Drop tablet works by releasing silver ions to remove 99.9999% of waterborne pathogens that can cause illness, disease, and death. The M-Drop is placed in the main water collection/storage unit of the household, and the container is filled with water (up to 10L per day). After 10-24 hours the water is safe to drink. This is repeated every evening and the M-Drop remains in the unit for up to six months as water is added and used daily.
It does not chemically change the taste or smell of water, making it easier for people to incorporate it into their water purification routine. The M-Drop is also adaptable, portable, and easy to store.
The roots of MadiDrop PBC and the M-Drop began in 2007 at the University of Virginia. Dr. James Smith was studying the performance of silver-embedded ceramic water filters in both laboratory and field settings. Extending his work in Limpopo Province, South Africa, Dr. Smith conducted a human-health study of 100 HIV-positive individuals and established a ceramic filter factory operated by a group of local women potters in the Venda region of Limpopo Province.
This work led to the establishment of PureMadi, a non-profit foundation associated with the University of Virginia Alumni Association. Today, PureMadi continues its student-based economic development efforts through the creation of ceramic water filter factories. In 2009, having demonstrated the performance capabilities of ceramic and silver ions, Dr. Smith and his research team focused their efforts on a new and innovative point-of-use water treatment products. After three years of intensive research and development, tens of thousands of water analyses, and experiments spanning several years in rural South African and Tanzanian households, they developed the M-Drop.
In 2015, MadiDrop PBC was created as a public benefit company under the leadership of David Dusseau, a Charlottesville-based entrepreneur with experience in launching new ventures. Today, MadiDrop PBC is working to provide safe drinking water technologies to communities throughout the world. Currently in 25 countries on almost every continent, MadiDrop PBC is working with humanitarian, relief and mission-based organizations to provide a simple water treatment approach to reduce waterborne illnesses.
