P&G Purifier of Water

P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water Program

Solution Overview & Benefits

The P&G water purification technology is a powdered mixture that removes pathogenic microorganisms and suspended matter, rendering previously contaminated water safe to drink. It can purify 10 litres of dirty water into potable water, per sachet, in 30 minutes. The P&G water purification technology contains a chlorine disinfectant for killing bacteria and an iron salt coagulant for removing suspended matter, protozoa, and viruses. It works in three ways: coagulation, flocculation, and disenfection. P&G water purification technology is safe for long-term use by the entire family, including infants, and was developed in colaboration with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

P&G Purifier of Water requires only a few simple tools that most target beneficiaries have at their disposal:

  • a scissor or knife to open the sachet,
  • a spoon or other implement to stir the water,
  • a cloth fabric to filter the treated water, and
  • two vessels (i.e. buckets) with volume capacity of 10 litres or more – the first to be used for the treatment process and the second to be used for storing the treated water.

P&G Purifier of Water comes in a 4 gram sachet labeled in English. Each sachet treats 10 litres of water. The sachets arrive from the manufacturing facility in cartons containing 20 strips of 12 sachets each, for a total of 240 sachets per carton. Each carton is 25 cm x 11 cm x 15.5 cm (length, width, height).

History & Development

The P&G Purifier of Water has been proven to eliminate disease causing microorganisms. It removes more than 99.99999% of common waterborne bacteria (including those that cause cholera), 99.99% of common waterborne viruses (including those that cause hepatitis A) and 99.9% of protozoa. P&G Purifier of Water packet was assigned a 2-star Performance Classification for providing Comprehensive Protection (high pathogen removal) per the WHO International Scheme to Household Water Treatment Technologies. In randomized controlled health intervention studies, the P&G Purifier of Water packet has been proven to reduce diarrheal disease incidence by up to 90%, with an average of about 50%. Global emergency relief organizations, such as AmeriCares, CARE, IFRC, PSI, Save the Children and World Vision, have provided clean drinking water using the P&G packets since 2004. To date, P&G has provided more than 15 billion liters of clean drinking water to people in need around the world.
