The Cookswell Charcoal Making Kiln uses small branches, twigs, maize cobs, coconuts or other woody biomass to create eco-charcoal for use in Jiko cookstoves. It is a portable drum kiln and is available in two sizes:
Small - yields approximately 8-16kgs of charcoal per-firing.
Large - yields approximately 20-40kgs of charcoal per-firing.
Dr. Max Kinyanjui developed the initial designs of the Cookswell Charcoal Kiln in 2006. The current design is open source and was created by Teddy Kinyanjui. It is currently sold across East Africa with plans to expand to Holland in 2016.
Cookswell Energy Saving Jikos promotes the sustainable production, management and processing of wood fuels as one of the many renewable energy resources for East Africa’s cooking needs. Founded in 1982, Cookswell is a family owned Kenyan business providing professional charcoal and wood fueled stoves, portable convection ovens, BBQ's, smokers, space heaters and charcoal-making kilns. With every stove and oven purchased, Cookswell includes a free packet of acacia tree seeds, to further the goal of making charcoal a sustainable energy source.
